About MEF
Over the years, Malawi's dependence upon financial assistance from Western donor countries has increased. However, the money and resources have been going to treat the effects caused by poverty leaving the root cause of this crisis and reason for such poverty unaddressed.
It is with an understanding of the real crisis in Malawi that three friends joined together to found the Malawi Education Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Founder and Executive Director of MEF, Gerald Macheso, was born and raised in Malawi's Masanjala Province and grew up watching friends fall into the same poverty as their parents because they were unable to find tuition money to attend school. The visionary behind this organization, it's through extraordinary tales of Gerald's childhood that inspired friends Joe Legaz and Adrian John to join as co-founders of the organization and address the real issue at hand: lack of education.
As world institutions attempt to keep the country's economy upright by providing food and material support, Malawi's education system has continued to struggle. As a result, there’s a vicious cycle of poverty that cannot be overcome without first reversing the effects caused by lack of education. As Greek Philosopher Diogenes Laertius once said "The foundation of every state is the education of its youth." We believe educating the youth of Malawi and helping them create industry and diversify their economy is necessary to return Malawi to self-sustainability and empower independence.
